Meditation And Managing Email

In both of my books (noted below), I often speak about managing one’s email.  In our cyber world, methods of communication capabilities are rapidly improving. Along with these functions, a deluge of increased email and multi-media messages have inundated virtually anyone with Internet connectivity. Many, if not most, netizens are spending greater time on composing, responding to  and sending communications, some spending up to 30% or more of their workday. Many people do not ever catch up.

There are serious ramifications to these trends, namely that the quality, clarity and tone of our electronic messaging is rapidly deteriorating, particularly with younger users who have rarely written traditional letters! Additionally, email may be overlooked, responded to tardily or done in haste. Sometimes any one of these will create negative results. Besides time management, many people become angry with messages they receive and respond with in ways they will later regret. Their whole mood might affect subsequent email they send or receive.

Email is not the only area to be affected by the cyber age. Society’s whole pace of living and sense of urgency have become accelerated bringing about health, personal and behavioral issues too numerous to discuss here.

How can these issues be addressed?  For this author, I have recently found a methodology to alleviate and improve these situations, Transcendental Meditation (TM). This simple technique has been proven in more than 300 studies to reduce stress, improve many health related issued and provide greater productivity, sometimes quite profoundly. For any netizen looking to better deal with our connected, high paced world, this may be an ideal, no compromise solution.

For example, instead of beginning a day checking email and continuing to do so throughout the day, one can set aside two times, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, to do the greater part of this. Prior to each session, a short and simple period of meditation will help achieve a calmer mood to better cope with the deluge of electronic communication. In turn, this will improve upon the quality and tone of one’s messages, not to mention the performance of their other roles and responsibilities.

As more and more technologies bring increasing reliance on cyber communication, the greater the need will be for the TM technique . . . this author is convinced!

Tabula Rosa Bulletin For 1/27/17 - ACA Enrollment

From Politico.com
HealthCare.gov resumed sending emails this afternoon reminding people to enroll in Obamacare, one day after the Trump administration said it was stopping outreach.
The Twitter account for the Obamacare enrollment website on Friday afternoon also encouraged people to sign up before the Jan. 31 deadline for obtaining coverage.
“Open enrollment ends in a couple days. #GetCovered for 2017!” the federal enrollment website tweeted around 1 p.m., the first communication in more than 24 hours about the looming deadline. Emails with an “urgent” reminder were also being sent today to individuals who had started but not yet submitted an application for coverage.
HHS did not respond to a request for comment this afternoon about whether it had reversed its decision.

The Trump administration’s decision on Thursday to halt all HealthCare.gov advertising and outreach enraged the law’s supporters, who say ads and other outreach tools — such as reminder emails — have been crucial in motivating younger, healthier people who frequently wait until the last minute. Obamacare supporters have taken to Twitter and other social media platforms to encourage enrollment.
“Shutting this down is very deliberately trying to squander this very valuable group of people who enroll at the last minute,” former CMS Chief Marketing Officer Joshua Peck said Friday.
The Obama administration had estimated that 13.8 million people nationwide would sign up for Obamacare plans during the three-month open enrollment window. As of Dec. 24, national enrollment figures stood at 11.5 million people.

It is important to always remember that we live in an era of free speech. We take this right for granted and most of us feel this is a very secure thing. However, History does have instances where freedom o f speech and expression have been crushed directly or indirectly.

That is why I felt it imperative to pass along the article below as I have similarly done so at other times such as during the Internet accessibility discussions a couple of years back. All netizens should be mindful that we cannot take anything for granted, especially now.

Rules For Surviving Autocracy
Masha Gessen was born in Russia and moved with her family to the US when she was 15.  Later she went back and worked in Moscow.  She has dual US and Russian passports.

I first found out about a her when a friend lent me her book The Man Without a Face: The Unlikely Rise of Vladimir Putin.  She's knows how things work.  When she writes, we should pay attention.

I found out about this article by Gessen, Autocracy:  Rules for Survival  from the same friend. (Thank you.)

The world has plenty of examples of countries sliding out of democracy.  I choose to take these rules very seriously.  Starting late Tuesday night, we stepped into an alternative universe.  We have some time of apparent normalcy, but it's going to be obvious soon that things are seriously wrong.

Below is a greatly abbreviated version of her six rules.
Rule #1: Believe the autocrat. He means what he says. Whenever you find yourself thinking, or hear others claiming, that he is exaggerating, that is our innate tendency to reach for a rationalization. This will happen often: humans seem to have evolved to practice denial when confronted publicly with the unacceptable. Back in the 1930s, The New York Times assured its readers that Hitler’s anti-Semitism was all posture. .  .
Rule #2: Do not be taken in by small signs of normality. Consider the financial markets this week, which, having tanked overnight, rebounded following the Clinton and Obama speeches. Confronted with political volatility, the markets become suckers for calming rhetoric from authority figures. So do people. .  .
Rule #3: Institutions will not save you. It took Putin a year to take over the Russian media and four years to dismantle its electoral system; the judiciary collapsed unnoticed. The capture of institutions in Turkey has been carried out even faster, by a man once celebrated as the democrat to lead Turkey into the EU. Poland has in less than a year undone half of a quarter century’s accomplishments in building a constitutional democracy. . .
Rule #4: Be outraged. If you follow Rule #1 and believe what the autocrat-elect is saying, you will not be surprised. But in the face of the impulse to normalize, it is essential to maintain one’s capacity for shock. This will lead people to call you unreasonable and hysterical, and to accuse you of overreacting. It is no fun to be the only hysterical person in the room. Prepare yourself. . .
Rule #5: Don’t make compromises. Like Ted Cruz, who made the journey from calling Trump “utterly amoral” and a “pathological liar” to endorsing him in late September to praising his win as an “amazing victory for the American worker,” Republican politicians have fallen into line. Conservative pundits who broke ranks during the campaign will return to the fold. Democrats in Congress will begin to make the case for cooperation, for the sake of getting anything done—or at least, they will say, minimizing the damage. . . .
Rule #6: Remember the future. Nothing lasts forever. Donald Trump certainly will not, and Trumpism, to the extent that it is centered on Trump’s persona, will not either. Failure to imagine the future may have lost the Democrats this election. They offered no vision of the future to counterbalance Trump’s all-too-familiar white-populist vision of an imaginary past. . .

MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems)

A MEMS (microelectromechanical system) is a miniature machine that has both mechanical and electronic components. The physical dimension of a MEMS can range from several millimeters to less than one micrometer, a dimension many times smaller than the width of a human hair.
The Internet of Things (IoT) world may be exciting, but there are serious technical challenges that need to be addressed, especially by developers. In this handbook, learn how to meet the security, analytics, and testing requirements for IoT applications.
Top of Form
The label MEMS is being used to describe both a category of micromechatronic devices and the processes used when manufacturing them. Some MEMS don’t even have mechanical parts, yet they are classified as MEMS because they miniaturize structures used in conventional machinery, such as springs, channels, cavities, holes and membranes. Because some MEMS devices convert a measured mechanical signal into an electrical or optical signal, they may also be referred to as transducers. In Japan, MEMS are more commonly known as micromachines, and in European countries, MEMS are more commonly referred to as microsystems technology (MST). In the United States, the acronym “MEMS” rhymes with the word “stems.”
Unlike conventional mechatronic devices, MEMS are often manufactured with the same batch fabrication techniques used to create integrated circuits (ICs) and many commercial MEMS products are integrated and packaged together with ICs. MEMS fabrication allows micro-sensors, which gather data, and micro-actuators, which convert energy into motion, to integrate on the same substrate.
The MEMS below is actually a disposable, wearable insulin pump for managing diabetes, designed by Debiotech and STMicroelectronics. According to Debiotech, the chip is a stack of 3 layers bonded together: a silicon on insulator (SOI) plate with micromachined pump structures and two silicon cover plates with through-holes. A piezoelectric actuator on the chip moves the membrane in a reciprocating movement to compress and decompress fluid in the pumping chamber.
Although MEMS have a low per-device production cost, packaging can be a challenge. Each MEMS must be packaged so that electrical or optical circuitry and other device components remain free from air and water contamination, while still being able to interact with the surrounding environment and accomodate motion.
MEMS was an emerging technology a few years ago, but today most people interact with MEMS on a daily basis. Each new automobile that rolls off an assembly line has at least 50 MEMS; they are important components in various mandated safety systems, including air bags, electronic stability control (ESC) and tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS).
The small system on a chip (SOC) that automatically adjusts screen orientation on a smart phone is another example of a MEMS many people interact with each day. As MEMS become smaller, require less power and are less expensive to manufacture, they are expected to play an important part in the wireless internet of things (IoT) and home automation.
Other commercial applications of MEMS include:
·         Sensor-driven heating and cooling systems for building management systems.
·         Micro-mirror arrays for high definition projection systems.
·         Smart dust for the detection of environmental changes in molecular manufactuing (nanotechnology) clean rooms.
·         Micronozzles to control the flow of ink in inkjet printers.
·         Tiny gyroscopes, barometers, accelerometers and microphones to support mobile apps.
·         Disposable pressure sensors for use in healthcare.
·         Optical switching devices that allow one optical signal to control another optical signal.
