SWOT analysis
SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats analysis) is a brainstorming exercise for helping to identify what internal and external factors will impact the ability of a project, product, place or person to be successful.
As its name states, a SWOT analysis examines four elements:

Strengths: Internal attributes and resources that support a successful outcome.
Weaknesses: Internal attributes and resources that work against a successful outcome.
Opportunities: External factors that the entity can capitalize on or use to its advantage.
Threats: External factors that could jeopardize the entity's success.

The matrix for conducting a SWOT analysis can be as simple as dividing a square into four quadrants and labeling them S, W, O and T. For example, decision-makers might choose to identify and list specific strengths in the upper-left quadrant, weaknesses in the lower-left quadrant, opportunities in the upper-right quadrant and threats in the lower-right quadrant. To guide participants through the analysis, the facilitator will typically use a series of open-ended questions such as "What do you do better than anyone else?" or "What does your biggest competitor do better?"
Although the snapshot that a SWOT analysis provides can be important for helping stakeholders understand what factors may impact success, the framework does have its limits. For example, if the analysis does not include all relevant factors for all four elements, stakeholders may walk away from the exercise with a skewed perspective. Moreover, because the exercise only captures factors at a particular point in time, the insight gained from a SWOT analysis potentially has a limited shelf life.

Netiquette IQ Blog Of 11/2018 - Composable Infrastructure

====================================================

Composable Infrastructure
A composable infrastructure is a framework whose physical compute, storage and network fabric resources are treated as services. In a composable infrastructure, resources are logically pooled so that administrators don't have to physically configure hardware to support a specific software application. Instead, the software's developer defines the application's requirements for physical infrastructure using policies and service profiles and then the software uses application programming interface (API) calls to create (compose) the infrastructure it needs to run on bare metal, as a virtual machine (VM) or as a container.
A composable infrastructure negates the need for IT administrators to be concerned with the physical location of infrastructure components. Instead, a framework defines what the individual objects "of composure" are -- and each object exposes information about itself through a management API. Then, when a software application requests infrastructure to run, available services are located through an automated discovery process and resources are allocated on demand. When an infrastructure resource is no longer required, it is re-appropriated so it can be allocated to another application that needs it.
The goal of a composable infrastructure is to allow an enterprise data center to use its own physical infrastructure in a more cost-effective manner by reducing waste and the amount of time it takes to deploy a new application. Several vendors, including HP Enterprise and Cisco are promoting the concept as a way for internal IT departments to provision workloads just as quickly and efficiently as public cloud service providers can, while still maintaining control over the infrastructure that supports mission-critical applications in a private cloud setting. The concept of pooling physical infrastructure resources and building infrastructure logically is supported by the growing popularity of software-defined networking (SDN), object storage, converged infrastructure and DevOps.
As of this writing, there are no agreed-upon standards for deploying a composable infrastructure and different vendors and proponents are describing composable infrastructure by different names -- including programmable infrastructure, intelligent infrastructure, software-defined infrastructure, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), decoupled infrastructure and hardware disaggregation.

The US-CERT Cyber Security Bulletin provides a summary of new vulnerabilities that have been recorded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) National Vulnerability Database (NVD) in the past week. The NVD is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC) / United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT). For modified or updated entries, please visit the NVD, which contains historical vulnerability information.
The vulnerabilities are based on the CVE vulnerability naming standard and are organized according to severity, determined by the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) standard. The division of high, medium, and low severities correspond to the following scores:
·        High - Vulnerabilities will be labeled High severity if they have a CVSS base score of 7.0 - 10.0
·        Medium - Vulnerabilities will be labeled Medium severity if they have a CVSS base score of 4.0 - 6.9
·        Low - Vulnerabilities will be labeled Low severity if they have a CVSS base score of 0.0 - 3.9
Entries may include additional information provided by organizations and efforts sponsored by US-CERT. This information may include identifying information, values, definitions, and related links. Patch information is provided when available. Please note that some of the information in the bulletins is compiled from external, open source reports and is not a direct result of US-CERT analysis.
The NCCIC Weekly Vulnerability Summary Bulletin is created using information from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) National Vulnerability Database (NVD). In some cases, the vulnerabilities in the Bulletin may not yet have assigned CVSS scores. Please visit NVD for updated vulnerability entries, which include CVSS scores once they are available.

Netiquette IQ Blog - Breach Detection System (BDS)

"Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony."

Mahatma Gandhi

breach detection system (BDS)

Posted by: Margaret Rouse

Breach detection systems (BDS) are a category of applications and security devices designed to detect the activity of malware inside a network after a breach has occurred.
Enterprise IT uses BDS to protect against the variety of advanced threats, especially unidentified malware.  Unlike tier 1 security, such as a firewall or intrusion prevention, that scan incoming traffic, BDS focuses on malicious activity within the network it protects. It determines possible breaches by differing combinations of heuristics, traffic analysis, risk assessment, safe marked traffic, data policy understanding and violation reporting. Using these methods, BDS are able to sometimes find breaches as they occur and at other times detect breaches and side-channel attacks that had not previously been found.
BDS has 3 different deployment methods:
  • Out-of band systems scan data mirrored from port scans from a switch or network tap.
  • In-line systems are deployed between the network and WAN interface just like tier 1 firewalls and intrusion prevention systems.
  • Endpoint deployments that use a client installed on endpoint machines.
Advanced persistent threats (APT) have a number of exploits they can use on a target, depending on what types of Internet applications the target uses and likely vulnerabilities. There are such a variety of threats that it is difficult to impossible for IT to be aware of every possibility. BDS helps with finding the unknown advanced and adaptive threats. Even major websites have been hacked;  furthermore, the average successful breach lasts 16 months. On both counts, there is certainly room to cut down on damages. The use of BDS represent a shift in philosophy from the idea of preventing every intrusion to realizing that intrusions will happen and focusing on catching those intrusions sooner.
BDS need to be configured with details such as operating system, a list of approved applications, and programs allowed to connect to the Internet. An understanding of the attack surface presented by your network is crucial to setting up a successful deployment. To that end, BDS can assess risky configurations, helping IT limit the attack surface.
Data policies can affect what type of BDS is right for an organization. Some BDS in each type of deployment forward their data back to the BDS service provider to do post-processing in their own cloud. If it is critical, however, that data not go offsite, there are also BDS vendors who offer the same level of processing on premises. BDS are a tier 2 security system, sometimes considered 2nd generation intrusion detection systems (IDS).
