Netiquette IQ - Keeping Your Email And Data In Synch With Your Laptop And Computer When Traveling

 Happy Halloween

Keeping Desktop and Laptop Data in Sync when Traveling

Stephen W Thomas September 14, 2015 www.loyaltyhacks.com

I have been traveling for work between 25 and 50 weeks a year for almost 15 years now.  On every trip, I carry my trusty laptop.  I am on laptop number 8 now as I get them replaced frequently.  In the weeks that I am not working onsite at a client, I work at home.  While I have a powerful laptop, when working at home I enjoy working on my supercharged, duel monitor desktop.
This can cause data synchronization issues between my laptop and desktop.   Luckily technology has improved greatly over the years to provide several options to solve this problem.  Lets take a deeper look into the two ways I overcome laptop and desktop synchronization issues.
Option 1: Cloud-based Synchronization
Cloud-based shared storage is the “it” thing these days.  Services like Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, and Microsoft OneDrive (just to name a few) are springing up all over the place.  They offer much more than just cloud storage, but really a whole cloud-based content management system with the ability for team collaboration with user’s permissions, direct download links, sharing large files that could not be sent via email, and more.
I use Dropbox for syncing smaller, more frequently used files like to-do lists.  I also use Dropbox for sharing files with Pluralsight, the training company I contract with to produce online training courses like “Traveling and Loyalty Programs Best Practices“.  With Dropbox, sharing large files with my editor is as easy as drag and drop into my Dropbox windows folder.
Pros:
Automatic real-time synchronization when systems are online
Simple and easy to use
Ability to easily share large files with others
User and permission management tools
Cons:
Data is stored in the cloud
Speed dependent on the internet connection

Netiquette Core Principals For Email Subject lines - Via Netiquette IQ and Entrepreneur.com

Core Principals For Email Subject lines and Happy Halloween

Entrepreneur.com JACQUELINE WHITMORE

OCTOBER 20, 2015
Crafting an effective email isn’t just about the text you deliver; it’s about getting people to open your email and read your message.
According to the Email Statistics Report, on a worldwide average, people sent and received 191.4 emails per day in 2014. With this many messages coming in constantly, it's no wonder many people won’t take the time to read all their email messages. They might read only a small portion of a message or headline, scanning for relevance before moving on to the next one.
The words you choose for your email subject line have a big impact on whether someone opens and reads your message. Use these tips to make your subject line more compelling.
1. Keep it short and sweet.
You don’t know how many words your recipient will see when your email pops up on their screen, so try to keep it under 50 characters, or between four and seven words. Avoid one-word subject lines such as “Hello” or “Hi.”
2. Use strong keywords.
Use words that will get the recipient's attention. For example, be specific and say, “Important Updates on the Wick Project” instead of “Important Updates.” Always change the subject line when the thread or content of the email chain changes.
3. Make your reader curious.
What do you have to say that your reader doesn't know already? Does your email challenge their current thinking or promise a reward? Questions are a great way to pique your reader's curiosity and inspire him or her to open your email in search of an answer.
4. Make a connection.
Refer to someone’s hometown, business or community and they’re likely to take a look. And don’t be afraid to put your name or business name in the subject line. Many people open emails based on the sender alone, so don’t miss the opportunity to reinforce your specific brand.
Craft your subject line with phrases such as “referred by” or “met you at [event].” People are more likely to open an email from someone they have met or is referred by someone they trust.
5. Never use spam words.
Subject lines that are too sales oriented will most likely to wind up in the receiver’s spam filter. Andrea O’Neill of Mail Chimp developed a listof the most notorious spam filter triggers. They include phrases like “Increase your sales,” “Information you requested,” or “Double your income.”
6. Punctuation and spelling.
To look professional, take care with your spelling in the subject line. Always re-read your entire email and do a spell check before sending. Spam filters also look for an abundant use of punctuation such as asterisks, all caps or numerous exclamation points.
7. Include dates and deadlines.
Deliver time-sensitive information in the subject line. This can include start dates or deadline notices. A successful promotional strategy for an event or a special offer will likely include a series of emails. For example, you can send out an initial announcement followed by a final reminder with a tight deadline to act.
8. Trumpet your announcement.
If you have something new and exciting to share about your business, channel that enthusiasm into your subject line. When you share an announcement, your email subscribers will feel like they’re the first to know and will be motivated to read on for more details.
Take a look at your own inbox and see which emails you tend to open first. Putting yourself in your contacts’ shoes is one of the best ways to write a subject line that will get you noticed and boost your business. A compelling subject line can make the difference between a message read and a message missed.

Netiquette IQ Blog For 10/29/15 - U.S. Lags Behind Europe on Internet Freedom

The United States considers itself to be the world's greatest example of equality, democracy and freedom. But many issues belie this, particularly  in foreign policy and voting rights.  Many netizens will be surprised by the article below Please read and decide!

From usnews.com 10/28/2015

U.S. Lags Behind Europe on Internet Freedom

Concerns about privacy and surveillance in the U.S. remain despite reforms, a study says.

The U.S. ranked sixth in Internet freedom, which has fallen around the world, in a recent study.
Governments around the world expanded surveillance laws during the past year, and it is so far unclear whether recent legislation passed by the U.S. will resolve a chilling decline in America's Internet freedom, according to an annual study that tracks international digital rights.
Controversies including broad government surveillance and calls by law enforcement to limit the encryption of consumer data have unbalanced America's reputation as a leader in Internet freedom in recent years. This year's study from advocacy group Freedom House saw the U.S. rank sixth out of 65 countries assessed – the same position it held in 2014 after being demoted from fourth place in 2013 and second place in 2012.
The study also scores countries' digital rights on a scale of zero (most free) to 100 (least free). The U.S. went from scores of 13 in 2011, 12 in 2012 and 17 in 2013 to a score of 19 in 2014 – the same ranking it currently holds.

Internet freedom declined overall around the globe this year, the report said, but the rankings changed little as nations mainly consolidated restrictions on digital rights. Northern European countries retained top ranks for Internet freedom, with Iceland staying in first place, followed by Estonia. Canada came in third place for having the most digital rights, while Germany took fourth place, demoting Australia to fifth place – in part because Australia enacted legislation expanding surveillance this past year.

China ranked as the worst offender against digital rights in the study, followed by Syria, Iran, Ethiopia and Cuba. These nations were ranked lowly due in part to their repression of free speech online and their surveillance efforts.
The study factors in events that occurred between June 2014 and the end of May 2015, meaning that it took into account net neutrality rules adopted by the Federal Communications Commission but not the USA Freedom Act, which aims to limit surveillance conducted by the National Security Agency.

Freedom House views the net neutrality rules as a boost to digital rights because they call for Internet service providers and the government not to disrupt wireless traffic, Laura Reed, a research analyst with the organization, tells U.S. News.
"It is yet to be seen whether the recently passed surveillance reforms will affect government spying efforts," Reed says. "We do see potential for improvement there."
Freedom House is also concerned by calls from the FBI that tech firms like Apple and Google should not encrypt their services, which can prevent users' data from being accessed following a government request. Limits on such encryption have increased in democracies and dictatorships alike during the past year, creating what the report says is a threat to personal privacy and a boon to surveillance efforts.
"We are waiting to see where the U.S. is going to come out on the encryption debate," Reed says.
Access to the Internet also played a role in the report, and the U.S. lagged in that area behind nations like Japan and the U.K., despite having a higher score for digital rights than those countries. Freedom House praised efforts by the FCC to expand online access, including through its opposition to a proposed merger between Comcast and Time Warner Cable. Reed says the merger would have lowered incentives for the combined company to offer faster connection speeds for lower prices.
"There are some Internet service providers that have a monopoly on certain regional markets in the U.S. and have few incentives to provide better service," she says. "Internet access in the U.S. is strong, but it could be better."
