Netiquette Core Principals - How Many Emails Are Bad? Via Tabula Rosa Systems

====================================================

The following is an excerpt from my book, "Netiquette IQ . . ." which is mentioned below. Many who think of Internet etiquette errors, tend to do so in basic ways such as spelling, structure and even tone.

Both there is another seldom thought of aspect as I detail below.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
With the billions of emails being sent every day, 88 to 92 percent of these are abusive (Message Anti-Abuse Working Group, MAAWG). Of those remaining, 50 percent are misunderstood by the recipient even though 90 percent of the users believe they are sending clear, properly interpreted communications (Nicholas Epleiy and Justin Kruger). So less than 5 percent of all messages deliver the bare essentials of any accurate content. Combined with the probability that another 50 percent of these contain bad Netiquette and/or multiple mistakes, the final number of “bad” emails approaches 98 percent. If a sender places themselves into this 2–4 percent tier of well-executed correspondences, their productivity, success, and even prestige will be effectively increased. As email continues to proliferate, the need to present well-executed messages will become even more essential.

        The trend by many email/text senders has become one where, instead of looking to improve grammar, lucidity, or proper tone, the writer seeks ways to be “fashionably” incorrect. This process of chic incorrectness implies that the sender may know how to write a message properly, but, in fact, he or she is regressing into permanent habits with counterproductive results.

Example
Sent: Monday, December  31, 2012 2:56 PM
To: Gus Jones
Subject: Gus let’s not meet …

…at your apartment but at Grand Central.  Same bat time but an hour later.  No need to call.

Cheers,
Sam Smith

555-303-7091 (c)

Explanation
In the above example, the author, Sam Smith, sent a message which has an alias.  This may cause the recipient, Gus, to ignore the email.  Secondly, by splitting the message between the subject field and the body, if Gus only sees this view he will not understand the nature of the email and conclude that he should not meet.  Thirdly, no confirming time is given and whatever time the meeting has been scheduled for has been changed.  So has the location.  While being seemingly chic, the author has composed a very flawed email with a significant chance of being unproductive and possibly causing both parties to waste their time.

Netiquette IQ Technical Term Of The Day - Alternative Data

====================================================

Alternative Data
Alternative data is information gathered from non-traditional information sources. Analysis of alternative data can provide insights beyond that which an industry's regular data sources are capable of providing.
The question of what constitutes alternative data varies from industry to industry. In banking, for example, a lender may traditionally rely on an applicant's credit score to assess risk and determine the probability that a loan will be paid back. When the applicant has no prior credit history, however, alternative data that illustrates the applicant's history of meeting financial obligations, such as paying a cell phone bill on time each month, can be useful information. A bank that includes alternative data sources in risk assessment for a loan may also factor the applicant's history of paying rent on time and whether or not the applicant consistently makes more than the required minimum monthly payment on credit card bills.
In recent years, the increase of data from mobile devices, satellites, sensors and websites has led to large amounts of structured, semistructured and unstructured data, also known as big data. All that data has the potential to be mined for information and potentially help people make better data-driven decisions. In response to the demand for alternative data, some traditional research firms have branched out to become alt-data providers, selling corporate clients data from non-traditional sources and services to analyze that data.
Once a data source begins to be used on a regular basis, it is no longer considered to be an alternative source. Current use cases for alternative data include:
  • Precision agriculture - farmers can analyze time-series images taken by drones to make more accurate predictions about crop yields.
  • Healthcare - public healthcare workers can mine social media for specific keywords to fine-tune initiatives that track the spread of influenza.
  • Investment firms - analysts can use satellite imagery to analyze the number of cars in a shopping mall parking lot and predict the state of a local economy.
  • Military - autonomous robots can be used as additional eyes and ears to help improve situational awareness.

Core Netiquette Rules For Writing Dates

====================================================

Core Netiquette Rules For Writing Dates

        Few who constantly misspell or misrepresent dates and times believe they are doing so, even though some will depict date and times differently quite often—sometimes from one message to the next.
        Just as with time, what can most commonly go wrong with misspelled (or incorrectly formatted) dates are missed appointments, payments, travel arrangements, and much more. Part of this problem also can be attributed to not providing full dates such as, The game will be Monday, May 1 instead of The game will be Monday. Why the emphasis here? If the sender actually has misrepresented the day of the week for whatever reason, the additional data might be a flag to the recipient to confirm the date. This works conversely as well: The game will be on Monday, May 1; The game will be on May 1—or even worse, The game will be on the first of the month.
Do not use the ordinal form of dates. Correct, May 6; incorrect, May 6th.
        The following formats are acceptable for depicting dates. It should be noted that many countries differ from the United States for their respective date representations. Specifically, these instances can easily be found online.
Fomat
Example
MMMM D, YYYY
Full month name, numeric day, comma, full year

October 16, 1951
D MMM YYYY
Numeric day, short month name, full year

8 Jan 1965
MMM D, YYYY
Short month name, numeric day, comma, full year

Dec 19, 1996
YYYY-MM-DD
Four digit year, dash, two digits month, dash, two digits day

1999-02-22
D MMMM YYYY
Numeric day, full month name, full year

17 July, 1918
Netiquette assumes that consistency be applied within bodies of email text. The following are a few more common suggestions.[JL1]
1)         Dates in quotes should not be changed.
2)         When changing appointment times, both the originally and newly scheduled times need to be shown.
3)         Approximate dates should be preceded by c. or circa and a year.
4)         Ranges in dates, as in résumés, should include the earliest and last, separated by a spaced hyphen or en dash (–).
5)         Decades should be represented by a simple plural, without apostrophes.
       Incorrect: 1990’s or 1990ies
       Correct: 1990s
6)         AD (or CE) and BC are capitalized, with no periods.
7)         The date format used in the United States is MM/DD/YYYY. Most other major countries use date exceptions, including China, Korea, and Japan (using year, month, day). Others exceptions include Russia, most of Europe, and most of South America, which use day, month, year.
