The following is from my new book, "You're Hired!" Please see the information following the Blog post.
Many
job applicants do not equate sending a résumé with the need to use Netiquette. Keep
in mind the need to balance items such as tone, fonts and content with your email and other forms of
electronic communication. Do not let one form of expression suppress all of the
others. These should be made complementary. Remember that a résumé should deliver
upon all that is mentioned in the introductory email. If they are not balanced,
the recipient might react negatively and lose the interest or enthusiasm that compelled
him or her to read your email and open your résumé in the first place. Here are
some basic Netiquette rules for the cohesion of your cover email and your résumé:
1.
Keep
font styles and attributes (e.g., size, weight) identical.
2.
Have
the same contact information.
3.
Avoid
repetition of any words.
4.
Show
the same tone and enthusiasm throughout your communication.
Maintain the same formatting. Many recruiting managers will
assume, even if subconsciously, that you have a positive attitude when they see
consistency. By maintaining consistency, it can be agreed that it may be
assumed that you are organized and “stable.”
Landing your
next job has as much to do with getting your email opened and read as it does
with your qualifications. Job searches
don’t work the way they used to. Employers use email to weed out job candidates
as they search for the perfect match.
Crafting effective, professional messages could make all the difference
in securing your next position.
It’s all
about the email. If your email is not
opened and read, you can’t get to the next phase of getting your dream
job! Read this book and in just 60
minutes you’ll know how to write better email. Learn to compose emails
effectively and soon you’ll hear those magic words: “You’re Hired!”
