Special Characters For Email Subject Lines - Via Netiquette IQ

There are many rapid changes happening with electronic communications. One of the more traditional areas of email and business is job seeking. While most of the global economy's areas are experiencing high unemployment, those seeking the jobs are utilizing more creative methods to compete for the attention of hiring managers and recruiters.

One of many of these applications is presenting graphics within an email or resume. The characters below are a sampling of these. Others can be be specific logos. Any of these can serve as links as well.

In general, these will definitely get more attention from your correspondence recipient, even if for a few seconds. The real question is, will they be effective? Most experts say no. Some feel that presenting special characters is frivolous or worse, unprofessional. Others believe this process deducts  value from the email content. Still others say that many readers have a "blind spot" for small graphics. Finally, there is the very real possibility that special characters can trigger spam filters which might be the single best argument against their use!

My belief here is that an initial email is best served to be conservative without any Netiquette errors. If this approach does not acheive results, than a second or third message with some moderate adjustments are certainly in order. In future blogs, I will elaborate on this further.

If you are among the readers currently pursuing, securing or changing employment, I hope this blog will be of value. Please also view the video trailer below concerning my recent Netiquette book.
