Job Seeking and Telling the Truth
“If you need justification or reasons not to
lie on an email or résumé, you have already lost the battle of being honest.”
—Paul Babicki
As the quotation suggests, there is no compromise for telling the truth in job hunting.
In my research, many esteemed people say that to avoid talking about oneself dishonestly,
you can use a creative approach where you omit or don’t fully disclose certain data.
When it comes to ethics and Netiquette, there are no half-truths. However,
there is also the consideration of providing too much information.
Almost all job applicants know that
direct lies will almost always eliminate a candidate from consideration or cause
termination when they are hired if the lie is uncovered. Many job seekers will not
even consider being untruthful either out of conviction or fear.
However,
there are some people who take a “middle ground” by rationalizing, somehow, that
a disputable truth achieved by being indirect is not a lie. This is done in one
of the following ways:
·
Exaggerating
·
Omitting salient data
·
Avoiding the issue
·
Substituting facts
·
Changing the subject
·
Giving unrelated information
·
Ignoring Netiquette
·
Ignoring logic principles
As I put it in my previous book “Contradictions in any communication are the first stepping
stones of mistrust.” The following is another
list of Netiquette essentials that comes from a more generalized, everyday perspective.
They are still significantly advanced beyond the general Netiquette 101 lists that
proliferate on the Internet.
